"Interpretations of Kimono"
2007
This series was created for a 2007 Summer "mini solo" show that was displayed at Tohono Chul park located in Tucson, Arizona. The concept was to interpret the beautiful silk fabric of Kimonos using glass. Many of the elements in these pieces were made with the use of a torch, such as the "millefiori" (small flower-like elements), multi striped ribbons of color, "wig-wag" style rings, and twists. Each 6"x12" panel was created by fusing layers of sheet glass and these torch worked elements together in a kiln. Then, the fused panels are "slumped", or shaped using a ceramic mold, with another firing in the kiln. Each panel is hung by a concealing bracket which creates an effect as if they appear to float against the wall.
To the right are image details of each 6 panels. |
